The Hohe Tauern National Park nestles between the Austrian provinces of Carinthia, Tyrol and Salzburg. It boasts some of the most stunning scenery in the Eastern Alps, an irresistible combination with 1800 kilometres of wild, unspoilt nature and culture.

A touch of history
The Romans had mule routes to cross over the Alps. Their terror of crossing snow-covered mountains led them to make up stories of monsters and devils. The roman writer Pliny calculated that the highest mountain must have been “50.000 double steps high” i.e., about 70.000 metres in modern figures.
Breathtaking mountain chains, perpetual ice and bubbling mountain streams greet the traveler at every turn, defining the monumental nature of the scenery.

Major attractions
The National Park´s real attractions is nature in all its splendour, starting with the Grossglockner, Austria´s highest peak: 3.800metres high, first conquered in 1.800, and still a challenge for even the most experienced climbers. In summer the mountains meadows become a shimmering, multicoloured carpet of wild flowers.
The three “Krimmler Waterfalls” add up to a total drop of 380 metres, among Europe´s highest and most spectacular. Breathtaking panoramic views are within reach of everyone. The volume of water reaches its peaks on July afternoons, which is the best time to photograph them. And let us not forget the Grossglockner Tourist Route, a path of great beauty linking Salzburg with Carinthia.

Cuisine
Pinzgauer “kasnock´n” is a traditional local dish, eaten straight out of the pan placed in the middle of the table. Its basic ingredients are flour, eggs, salt, water, butter, original Pinzgauer cheese, onion and chives. It is eaten with salad and milk. The other outstanding local speciality is the lamb, not forgetting the wide range of produce from the ecological farms.

Activities
There is a wealth of leisure and sporting activities to be enjoyed in the National Park. Cycling, horse trekking, sailing, canoeing, hiking, summer skiing on the glaciers and climbing are just a few.
There is always a team of professionals close by, ready to help you discover the secrets of this fascinating Park.
Another major attraction for visitors is a trip to Salzburg, Mozart´s home town, just 80 kilometres (50 miles) away.

How to get there
It´s easy to get to National Park Hoe Tauern by air, train or car. It´s just 250 kilometres (156 miles) from Munich International Airport and 85 kilometres from Salzburg airport. Once in the region there´s no more need for the car. Walking, cycling and using the local train service are the best way to get around the local sights.
